Assistant Superintendent
Laurel Hill Cemetery,
Bala Cynwyd, PA
Founded by John Jay Smith in 1836, Laurel Hill Cemetery is among the first rural cemeteries in the United States. In 1869, the cemetery expanded across the Schuylkill River and is known today as Laurel Hill West (this includes a pet cemetery). Together, the two cemeteries constitute 265 acres and feature the headstones and monuments of close to 200,000 people buried in them. Both cemeteries are home to generations of Philadelphians from all stations of life including well-known names representing nearly every discipline—artists, architects, authors, doctors, musicians, politicians, scientists, war veterans, civic and business leaders, innovators, and more. Names such as Rittenhouse, Strawbridge, and Widener are of local interest, but Breyer, Luden, Stetson, and Whitman are brands known across the United States.
Laurel Hill is more than a cemetery, however, and in many ways predated the public park system. With a stunning array of manicured green space, winding roads, and beautiful trails and walkways, Laurel Hill is an accredited arboretum on both sides of the Schuylkill River. It includes an impressive living collection of over 6,000 trees and shrubs representing 700 distinct species and cultivars, several champion trees, and beautiful gardens managed by professional horticulturalists. Laurel Hill is fiercely committed to sustainability, maintains rain and pollinator gardens, and is the honored recipient of SITES Gold certification (the only cemetery in the world with such a designation) for its green burial area, Nature’s Sanctuary, at Laurel Hill West.
Laurel Hill has created a new position, Assistant Superintendent, to maintain this incredible set of properties. Reporting directly to the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent manages the functions of the Operations Department’s grounds crew (a team of 15 individuals). The person and the team oversee daily grounds maintenance and burial and cremation activities and support public/private events to ensure a clean, safe, and enjoyable environment for all visitors. The Assistant Superintendent in partnership with the Superintendent will need to provide vision, leadership, and strategic thinking. The operating budget is over $2.5 million (this includes salaries).

President and CEO
Eastern State Penitentiary
Historic Site, Philadelphia, PA
Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site seeks a strategic, dynamic, and agile individual to become the President and Chief Executive Officer.
Operational from 1829 until 1971 and recognized for its grand architecture and strict discipline, Eastern State Penitentiary was the first world’s true ‘penitentiary,’ a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret in the hearts of prisoners. At its completion, the building was the largest and most expensive public structure ever erected in the United States, and quickly became a model for more than 300 prisons worldwide. Its valued, sky-lit cells once held many of the America’s most notorious lawbreakers, including bank robber ‘Slick Willie’ Sutton and Al Capone.
Today, the site is a museum and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and open to the public for tours seven days a week, 12 months a year. There is an audio tour, critically-acclaimed artist installations, and award-winning exhibits. The site interprets the legacy of American criminal justice reform, from the nation’s founding through to the present day, within the long-abandoned cellblocks of the nation’s most historic prison.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President and Chief Executive will be charged with developing and implementingthe institution’s next strategic plan in partnerships with many constituencies. The leader will need to manage a talented and committed staff and provide financial stewardship in maximizing earned revenue and promoting the site as a destination regionally and nationally thoughtfully.
