Doing Our Part

I recently hiked in the Grand Canyon at the Havasupai Reservation with my daughter Libby, my good friend John, and John’s daughter Sarah. An engineer with innate organizational skills, John was our chief planning officer who secured the hiking permits, bought the food, and took care of the myriad other details. Sarah was our chief entertainment officer at camp. Thanks to her, we played Bananagrams (similar to Scrabble), and she won every game! Libby served as our chief encouragement officer. When the hiking got tough under the hot sun, Libby had kind words propelling us to tackle the challenging terrain. I was the chief pace officer and set our tempo on the trail. The trip was an enormous success due to all of us playing our parts.

As you develop your team to accomplish a shared goal, how do you help clarify everyone’s role to maximize effectiveness? How do you ensure everyone is playing to their strengths?
